Rugby Touch Rules

rugby super league

A typical team has ten (10) players. The team may have up to six (6) substitutes on the field at any one time. If a substitute is utilized, it must contact the line at scrimmage. Two points must be forfeited if a team has fewer than six players. A team may play without penalty if it has six or fewer players at any given time.

After a possession change, the First Pass brings the ball in play. This could be a forward pass, or a knock-on. In the event of a forward pass, the player may be able to catch the ball over the try-line and then run the ball backwards with forward momentum. A knock-on, on the contrary, brings the ball into play. But, it might not lead to a touchdown.

Roll ball is an act which restarts play after one touch. This is only required when the ball is removed from the hand. The ball may not be rolled more than one meter and the ball cannot be run out of bounds. If a player is in possession of the ball and the ball is knocked from his hand, he must immediately act by throwing the ball to a teammate. Although a player can move to the best position for support in front of his teammates, he may not score.

The most crucial part of the game is its touch count. Each team has six chances to touch the ball. The ball must be returned to the spot where it was touched. In the event that a player is touched before a touchdown, the ball is considered dead. The touch count restarts for the attacking team.

The position of the ball in the possession of the attacking player at the time of touch determines the touch count. A player who is onside in a defending scoreline can touch the attacking player by leaning over the scoreline, but the person in possession of the ball cannot do this. Players who are defending the ball may touch it if they pass directly to a player. However, this does not count as a touch. The possession of the player must be returned to where the touch took place, regardless his position.

The touch count varies depending on position. Referees may allow a player to be touched before a touchdown. A player at the sideline can be touched prior to a touchdown but cannot touch it in the ruck. This is the case if a defending player makes a forward pass or knocks on, but cannot interfere with the player in possession.
