How To

How do I get started with Base Jumping?

Base jumping, also known as free-fall parachute, is a sport that involves participants leaping from fixed objects (usually cliffs), like bridges, towers or buildings without any equipment. To land safely, the participant must jump off the object. It is similar to skydiving, except that there is no requirement to wear a parachute, nor do you have to hold your breath while waiting to open it.

The most common type of base jumper is called a wingsuit jumper. A wingsuit is two pieces of fabric joined together. One piece covers the chest and arms, and the second piece covers the legs. The boots enable the jumper to stand upright while in flight. The jumper pulls the ankle straps tighter during descent. This causes the fabric covering his/her legs to bunch up under his/her body, creating an air pocket. When this air pocket becomes big enough, the jumper opens his/her parachute and lands safely.

Some base jumpers use powered suits to help propel themselves through the air faster. Powered suits have two main parts: a backpack containing batteries and a jet pack worn under the jumper's clothes. These packs have small rockets that can shoot hot gases at high speeds. This creates thrust, which propels the jumper forward. However, these suits can be heavy and loud.

BASE jumping is a sport that many people don't understand. It is important to understand the risks involved in BASE jumping before you attempt to learn.
